Not knowing 700 vs 26"??? Really? My wife was horrified and she has no bike nerd tendencies and no mechanical interest.

I need some parts but have avoided Legend recently due to Brompton lust. My wife would not appreciate another bike.

Dropped by Legend for some parts today. They have a "naked" Brompton (all visible welds, no paint) with titanium fork and rear triangle. That is the coolest bike that I absolutely do not need.

We don't have bike racks at any of the nearby stores, and they don't seem inclined to install them. I was threatened with a citation the other day for securing my bike to a Handicapped parking sign! When I asked for suggestions as to another place to secure the bike, they didn't have any.

Sad part is the letter of the law they were citing had to do with blocking/occupying a handicapped space, which I WAS not doing, I had the bike on the back side of the sign...need to consider moving, anywhere that has bike racks.

You're right ! I've been doing a "bike parking hall of shame" off and on for the past year or so, on Friday's on my blog. Lately I've been showcasing good parking for a change, and I've teamed up with Grid Chicago for a Bike Parking Award ( good and bad). There are plenty of examples of both. And oh do I hate those racks like the one you picture above!

Could be!

Michael Lewis has a great line in Boomerang about that: "a tourist can't help but have a distorted opinion of a place: he meets unrepresentative people, has unrepresentative experiences, and runs around imposing upon the place the fantastic mental pictures he had in his head when he got there."

Still, I've only seen mixed use work on whole streets where car traffic is either banned or discouraged to the extent that drivers avoid them. Then it does okay because the space is wide enough to accommodate everyone without strict delineation.

By the way: love your shop! Was in last winter. Did all I could not to leave with a Brompton.

1. My guess is that the dirt rut was created by runners for two reasons:
a. it is better for the knees
b. to avoid walkers

2. You cannot comment unless you know the specific circumstances; certainly commuting cyclists and tourists don't mix well, but there are many circumstances where mixed use works very well
